What You Need to Know

NEW MEXICAN immigration regulations went into effect on May 1, 2010. These will hopefully simplify and streamline immigration applications and eliminate some of the frustrations. Now your contact with the immigration service must now begin by filing an application via the internet, before going to the immigration office.

This includes applying for an FM-3 or registering a change of domicile. The digital application includes a bar-coded print-out which you must bring with you. You will still have to write a letter specifying your request.

At the right is our English translation of the window you’ll eventually get to if you want to extend your stay or renew an FM-3, for example. (The INM start page is www.inm.gob.mx/, but you can directly access that page by using the web address below.)

When you are finished, click the button at the bottom of the screen that lets you generate two copies of the form. The system will then let you check your responses, before acceptance. If it’s all good, click the “sí” button at the bottom of your screen and make sure your printer is connected. The finished, bar-coded, document will print out for you to take to the immigration office. The only bar-coded form that counts is the one you sign and bring with you. The new FM-3 and FM-2 will be in the form of plastic card that will be updated electronically.
